Summer is the perfect time of year to get out and have some fun. After the sun has spent several months in hiding, nothing feels better than soaking up those rays. Plus, there’s so many outdoor activities to choose from that make staying active fun. Cycling, jogging, swimming, hiking, and watersports – they’re all great!
However, while the sun is a plus we look forward to, it can also be a danger if the proper precautions aren’t taken – especially in areas with extreme heat or humidity. The last thing anyone would want when making that effort to stay healthy is accidentally damaging their body.

This is oh-so-important. While it’s always essential to stay hydrated during workouts, it becomes even more so when it’s hot and you’re really sweating it out. Make sure to drink a couple of glasses an hour before your workout, and bring a water bottle with you to sip on during your outdoor activity sessions. Even if you don’t think you’re thirsty, it’s a good idea to take small sips throughout the duration of your outdoor activities.
Sunscreen is vital
If you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, don’t forgo the sunscreen in the quest of a tan. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and it’s in good mind to protect it from harsh UV rays. Make sure to apply it 45 minutes before heading out and reapply throughout the day if you plan to spend a long time outdoors.
Wear loose, light colored clothing
Light colored clothing will help reflect heat, rather than absorb it like dark clothing does. Looser, more breathable fabrics like cotton can help keep you cool. Definitely stay away from the denim and ultra form-fitting outfits.
Time yourself wisely
If possible, avoid exercising outdoors from 10 am to 3 pm. This is the hottest part of the day and can make your outdoor activities much harder to complete. Try waking up early in the morning to get some sunshine without the burn.
